Botox: how it works, who it is for and what to expect from the result

Expression lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes appear naturally from the repetition of facial movements over the years. Botulinum toxin is one of the most studied and widely used treatments in aesthetics to soften these lines, with a natural result that doesn't compromise the face's expressiveness.

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin, popularly known as Botox®, is a substance that temporarily reduces the contraction of specific facial muscles. By relaxing the muscles responsible for so-called dynamic wrinkles — the ones that appear with movement, like frowning or smiling — the skin over those muscles becomes smoother and more even.

How the procedure works

The application is done in the clinic, with a very fine needle, at specific points on the face defined during the assessment. The procedure is quick and discomfort is minimal. The first effects begin to appear between 3 and 7 days after application, with full results in about 15 days.

Who it is indicated for

Botulinum toxin is indicated to treat different areas of the face, including:

  • Forehead lines — softens the horizontal grooves caused by frontal muscle movement.
  • Glabella (frown lines) — smooths the vertical lines formed when frowning.
  • Crow's feet — reduces wrinkles around the eyes, more visible when smiling.
  • Barcode lines — softens the fine vertical lines above the upper lip.
  • Mild chin sagging and jawline contour — helps define the lower facial contour.
  • Gummy smile — reduces excessive gum exposure when smiling.

A natural result, without losing expressiveness

One of the biggest concerns for anyone considering the treatment is losing the naturalness of facial expression. That's why the dose and application points are individualized for each patient — the goal is to soften expression lines while preserving the face's natural movement, without a "frozen face" effect.

Duration and maintenance

The effect of botulinum toxin lasts, on average, 4 to 6 months, varying according to each patient's musculature and the dose applied. Maintenance sessions are recommended to preserve the result over time, and the muscles tend to respond in an increasingly milder way after regular applications.

Care after application

In the first few hours after application, it is recommended to avoid lying down, doing intense physical exercise and touching the treated area, so the toxin distributes correctly at the applied points. The patient can resume daily activities the same day.
